The Mess We Make

“Kids are Messy!

-Jennifer Aniston

Sometime back, I checked into a hotel room and found a card with the following message neatly placed on the desk:

“Sure, life can be messy. But that’s why I’m here. Don’t worry about a thing.  Just make yourself at home, have fun, and enjoy your room. I’ll clean it all up. If you need anything, just press “0.” -Your Housekeeper.”

This refreshing message captured my imagination.  The words were inviting, soothing, warm and friendly. The message sounded like something Jesus might say to His followers.

Yes, life can be messy.

Consider the following synonyms for the word “mess’; untidy, muddle, chaos, confusion, clutter, jumbled, disorder, disarray. At one time or another, we’ve all used words like these to describe feelings that we’ve had about our existence here on Planet Earth. Life is good, but it is often all these things as well.

Here is good news about our messy lives; God wants to clean them up.  The Apostle Paul reminds us that, “Out of sheer generosity He [God] put us in right standing with Himself. A pure gift. He got us out of the mess we’re in and restored us to where He always wanted us to be. And He did it by means of Jesus Christ (Rom 3:23-24 MSG).”

Like a good housekeeper, Jesus restores us back to our original design; our pre-messed-up-state. He is whispering words, similar to what my hotel housekeeper used, to all of us who have made a mess of things:

“Sure, life can be messy. That’s why I came. Don’t worry about a thing. This is not your home, but feel free to have fun, and enjoy the abundant life I’ve given you. You are going to make a mess from time to time, but I’ll clean it all up. If you need anything, just call out my name. I’m already there.” -Jesus

God’s Grace, offered through the life, death, and resurrection of His Son Jesus Christ is inviting, soothing, warm and friendly. And most of all, it is available to all who choose to put their trust in Him.
